Before taking your first Capoeira class, or in your first weeks of class, students always have a million questions.  Never be afraid to ask Mindinho or one of the more experienced students anything that may be on your mind.  Here are some answers to frequently asked questions.  Hopefully these will help you out!

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I haven’t worked out in a long time? What if I am not flexible?

It is very normal for people starting Capoeira to have spent years, perhaps their whole life, never having been involved in any serious physical activity. Don’t let this discourage you! Our instructors have a lot of experience working with people just like you. With some hard work and dedication (and a little sweat), you will be able to see changes in your physical appearance and cardiovascular health in just a short period of time. For those of you athletes and non-athletes worried about your level of flexibility….this will develop with time and determination. Come to the class ready to work and soon your body will be in shape to play Capoeira

What if I have never done Capoeira before?

Don’t feel alone! The majority of our students have never done Capoeira before. While it may look difficult, many of the movements, when given a little time, become much easier. When you are starting it is recommended that you try to make it to class at least three times per week so that you will have an easier time with your development.

What should I wear?

For your first class, comfortable pants and a comfortable shirt are the best choice. Usually sweatpants, yoga pants or other workout pants are a great option. You won’t need any shoes or socks.

Should I bring anything with me to class?

It’s great to bring a bottle of water, although there is a water fountain located in the hallway just outside the studio.

What age do people usually start Capoeira?

We offer classes for ages 2 and older. However, Capoeira is not just for the young. You may start Capoeira at any age. We have had students start in their sixties. If needed, classes are tailored according the ability level of each individual student.

How much are the classes?

The first class is free. After that you may pay per class or one of our payment plans. We do have a sliding scale and offer scholarships for those who qualify.

How long does it take to learn Capoeira?

It’s better not to worry too much about the answer to this question. By committing yourself to taking class on a regular basis, the basics components of Capoeira can be learned in a relatively short period of time. However, this is just your foundation. The actual game of Capoeira can take years to begin to understand and even more to be able to play very well. However, that is the beauty of Capoeira. Capoeira is an art form that allows you the freedom to express yourself. Beginners are as welcome in the roda as those who have been playing for years. Just go to class, train hard and the results of your efforts will be clear in time.

Which class is right for me? Which class should I go to for my first class?

First time students are encouraged to take an all-levels class. All-levels classes have a variety of students and generally show the true energy of both the class itself and the group. After your first class you may attend any all-levels or beginners class. However, if a beginner’s class works better into your schedule for your first class, then it’s no problem.

Can I wear shoes?

We never use shoes inside our studio. If you are having problems, or fear that you may have problems with blisters on your feet you may use athletic tape and/or modern dance “paws.”

Can I just come to watch?

Everyone is encouraged to participate but if you really just want to come check out the class first then please feel free to stop by during normal class hours. You are welcome to sit inside the studio and there will be someone there to answer any questions you might have.
