What if I have never done Capoeira before?
You are not alone! The majority of our students have never done Capoeira before. We start by teaching you the basic movements and you take it from there.
What if I'm not in good physical condition? What if I'm not flexible?
Don’t let this discourage you. Physical conditioning and flexibilty come with time and practice. If you can get yourself to the studio, our instructors can get you in shape. Of course, the more you train, the faster you will see results!
Am I too old (or too young) to start Capoeira?
It's never too late, or too early, to start Capoeira with us. We have had students start Capoeira in their sixties with great success, while our youngest students are age two! Classes are tailored to meet the ability level of each individual student and the group as a whole.
How long does it take to learn Capoeira?
This really depends on your own personal goals. Think of it as learning a new language. The more of the language you learn, the more clearly you can express yourself to others. If your goal is to have a conversation with someone that consists of, "Hi, how are you?" and "I am fine, thank you.", you should be able to do that within a month or two. If you plan to discuss world politics or philosophy, be prepared to spend more time learning the language.
How much will it cost?
We offer a free private lesson and group class for San Diego residents trying Capoeira with us for the first time. After that, you can choose one of our membership plans or pay per class. We also offer family, student, and military discounts.
How often should I train?
The majority of new students start by training 2 - 3 times a week. With classes offered 7 days a week, we hope you can find some that fit into your schedule
Everybody else is wearing a uniform. What should I wear?
For your first class, comfortable workout wear is fine. Should you decide to sign-up, we have uniforms available for purchase at the front desk.
Why is everyone barefoot? Can I wear shoes?
The majority of Capoeiristas (people who play Capoeira) do not wear shoes while training. We prefer this for several reasons, the main one being that you are more likely to have an ankle or knee injury when training with shoes on. Training barefoot may initally cause blisters to develop on the ball, heel or toes of your foot, but these will eventually subside as your body adjusts. Many students consider buying stock in athletic tape companies during this adjustment period.
What should I bring?
Bring a towel and water, although there is a water fountain located in the hallway should you forget.
Can I just come to watch?
Of course! You are welcome to sit inside the studio during one of our classes and observe. There will be someone there to answer any questions you might have.
Where do I start?
Start by signing up for a free private lesson! From there, the instructor will determine with you what your goals are and direct you to the appropriate class. If you choose to start with a free trial class, stop by one of the 'All Levels' classes. The instructor will take you aside and begin to teach you some of the basic movements before you join the rest of the group.
